Who Am I? What Am I Doing?

September 27, 2017

Who am I? So glad you asked.

I am the founder and owner of the PA Makerspace here in Phoenixville, PA. My name is Seth Roberts and I am a maker, skill collector, and creative who has the attention span of...  _______________ (fill in the blank with something that doesn't have a very long attention span.)

How did this Makerspace get started?

Basically, I am just scratching my own itch. After I graduated Art School, I searched for a place that I could be creative, make things, free-think, and do all this with other creative people. I was tired of being the lone artist that never gets to collaborate with other creatives. When I was in Art School I didn't realize it then, but I was in a glorified makerspace. I had everything at my fingertips to make whatever I wanted. I had other minds there for constructive criticism and to promote artistic growth. For the last 12 years, I have been searching for the perfect place but to no avail.

So, I decided "Screw this! I am making my own place!" The initial idea started out as an art studio, but I wanted it to be more than that. I wanted Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Mathematics to be here. I wanted people to invent, innovate, make a mark on the our culture and society with products that are actually useful and worth something. I wanted knowledge to be freely shared between people. I wanted people of all ages and all backgrounds to work together to create something amazing. I wanted to spread this idea that anyone can learn anything they want and the fact that you don't need a college degree to succeed here! Anyone is welcome!

Out of those thoughts, an idea was born -- PA Makerspace. Why Pennsylvania Makerspace? I didn't want it to be limited to just a town or city. I wanted to be able to spread across the state of PA. We'll start with PA and if it works well, then we can think about spreading to other states as well. But for now, PA is a big enough place and it will keep us busy for a while.

Everyone is welcome. My goal is be busting at the seams this time next year, and it will require us to find a bigger location. Let's make that happen!
